Rescue 2

The Bedford Fire Department took delivery of a 2006 International/Osage ambulance in Spring 2006.  Rescue 2 is the newest vehicle in the department, and was placed into service as the primary ambulance on May 4, 2006.  The new heavy-duty truck replaces Rescue 1, a 2000 Ford/Lifeline ambulance that will be now be used as a reserve for special events or major incidents.

The primary ambulance responds to approximately 1,200 emergencies annually.  Rescue 2 is a Basic Life Support (BLS) unit, staffed by two firefighters.  If Advanced Life Support (ALS) is needed, paramedics from Emerson ALS or Armstrong Ambulance respond to assist.  Most patients who are transported go to Emerson Hospital in Concord or Lahey Clinic in Burlington.  Boston MedFlight is contacted for serious incidents requiring critical care transport into the city.

Rescue 2 was custom designed for service in Bedford by a dedicated team consisting of Lieutenant Mike Bauman, Firefighter Dana Park, and Firefighter Mark Daly.

Some notable features include:

  • A compartment for protective firefighting gear and SCBA equipment
  • Custom-designed compartment systems and shelving
  • Heavy duty drivetrain and braking system
  • Vehicle safety systems, including backup sensors
  • State-of-the-art oxygen system for patient care
